Niki and I photographed together in the spring of 2023, inside a working men’s club in Chelmsford. I had first met her months earlier in The Lion and The Lamb, a pub nestled into an estate in Hoxton, London. She and her boyfriend at the time were on a date, dressed in sharp fits, my eyes were fixed to them for at least half an hour before I couldn't suppress my urge to have a chat, if only to offer a compliment. With her semi-mullet hairstyle and his mod look, I felt compelled to see if they were keen to talk to me.

What began as a passing remark unfolded into an hours-long conversation. We spoke about music, fashion, and the subcultures that had shaped us, threads of identity and the belonging that had woven through our own lives. Niki, who, like me, had once worked for a magazine, had since left behind the restlessness of the city in search of stability. She had returned to Essex to raise her children, taking up work as a nurse to support them. Still full of heart, we spoke on endless stories of London night life and her latest love affair with tech house (she’s an Essex girl after all).

She told me about her upbringing as the daughter of a British Army officer, forever moving from one place to the next, never long enough to have childhood friends. The constant displacement had shaped her sense of self, she spoke of always beginning again, of the elusive feeling of home. For some like Niki, that sense of home was found on the dance floor, where the pulse of music and movement dissolves the boundaries that keep us apart during the day and how the community forms a modern echo of something ancient, where sweat, breath, and energy are shared in a kind of collective catharsis.

Unprompted Niki dressed like the living reflection of the disco ball in Pikes Ibiza, the function room became a source of entertainment for the locals as she scattered every trace of light across the room. Embellished in metallic tones, from golds to flashes of green, she had chosen to wear something she’d worn on a night out, a look inspired by her love for the club.

Her style was a testament to self-expression, unapologetic, radiant, and deeply personal. I admired her for it, not just for the visual spectacle but for what it symbolised. In her, I glimpsed a reflection of my older self, and in that moment, a beautiful connection formed between us, two kindred spirits bound by the same longing for freedom, the warmth of dance music and letting the natural order of life occur - accepting that sometimes we don’t get what we want.
